Alex’s jaw clenches. “He’s a good dude.”
“He is. Handsome too.” He has no clue why he says it until it’s already out in the open.
“Huh,” Alex says, eyes dark when they meet Henry’s, “you think?”
Henry finds himself nodding, swallowing tightly around the glass of water Alex passes him. “Yes. He’s from Texas, isn’t he?”
“We both are.” Alex’s knuckles are tinged with white where they sit around his glass. “Grew up together.”
“Cowboy,” Henry snorts, a private joke almost to himself. He’d had a bit of a thing for cowboys in his youth. Something that had unfortunately also crossed over into his writing.
“You like cowboys?” Alex asks.
And suddenly it feels dangerous.
Or, Pez is determined that this blind date will be the one to end all others. Henry's a lot more interested in his date's best friend.

Summary
Alex trails off as Nora leans over to whisper something in June’s ear that causes her to laugh and fully turn her attention to Nora.
Pez, upon hearing the laughter of his goddess, also turns to be included in their conversation. Bea takes this time to pick up her phone and look through her notifications, then notes that most of their drinks are empty so she offers to get them refills.
He has, once again, successfully lost his audience.
It shouldn’t hurt so much, not anymore. Alex is pretty used to this.
They’ve never cut him off or spoken over him, it’s more subtle. It’s getting up for a bathroom break or whispering to each other or tilting phone screens to share a meme while he’s talking and should, theoretically, have their undivided attention. It’s always something.
It shouldn’t hurt.
He’s used to it.
It’s not personal, they say.
But it only happens to him.

Alex is used to being tuned out by his friends. Then, there’s Henry, all blue eyes and attentive. Alex sort of loves him.

Henry is a young man, as far as anyone can tell, fair of complexion with his flaxen blond hair, and strong of body. Unfortunately, this is not exactly good for business. It frequently means that people seeking out the services of a witch keep bothering the lovely, somewhat goth girl—but maybe just quirky, or even wiccan, Henry isn’t sure, down the street. Instead of coming to him for the services he can provide, lately, he keeps getting these people at his door who are looking for sex.
When he mentions this to June, the somewhat maybe-goth girl, she laughs and tells him, “Henry, that’s because of the newly established sex worker two houses over from you. I’ve been telling you for a while now you need to put a sign up unless, of course, you’re looking for sex now. I have people I can set you up with, plenty of whom would be happy for just a roll in the hay. If that’s what you want, you don’t hafta resort to stealing the business from the couple.”
