Not many people vote for names they don’t recognize, and they have a higher chance of recognizing an incumbent’s name than a challenger’s—fact.
It’s only impressive to canvas for a campaign if the guy you’re canvassing for is elected—fact.
Canvassing on a successful campaign will show Padmé Amidala that they share similar interests and that will be enough to win her over once the semester ends and she’s no longer Anakin's TA—hypothesis.
So Obi-Wan Kenobi was a safe choice. A stellar choice.

Summary
Anakin's knighting ceremony is canceled. Somehow, Qui-Gon Jinn has joined the land of the living again, and the Council is too busy figuring out what to do. Washing their hands off the matter, the Council decides to make Qui-Gon Anakin's and Obi-Wan's problem.
For Anakin, this is a dream come true (minus the mishap with his knighting). He has always wanted Qui-Gon as his Master. Unlike Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon would understand him. This is his chance to experience what having Qui-Gon as sort-of-Master would be like.
The answer is as surprising as it's disappointing. It sucks a lot. Rather than understanding, Qui-Gon misunderstands everything. Half the (disparaging) stuff Qui-Gon says about Obi-Wan flies over his head, too, but Anakin's convinced Qui-Gon's trying to drive a wedge between Obi-Wan and him.
So, on second thought, Anakin prefers to remain Obi-Wan's Padawan. Really, there's no need to reschedule his knighting ceremony.

Summary
The night Palpatine reveals himself as the Sith Lord and Anakin loses everything, Anakin assumes he has hit rock bottom. A reasonable assumption.
A year later, Anakin knows things can get worse – and so they do. Sidious has returned and wants Anakin dead, Anakin is a powerless civilian, and Chancellor Amidala decides her ex-husband needs Jedi protection.
When Obi-Wan is selected for the job, Anakin doesn’t know whether he should cry or laugh hysterically. The correct answer proves: fall in love.

The smart thing to do would be for Anakin to cut his losses, save himself the embarrassment, and break up with Obi-Wan now, before they even had a chance to get started. Beat the Christmas rush, as it were.
But then, Anakin had never been particularly smart when it came to matters of the heart. His broken marriage was evidence enough of that. “I still owe you that dinner,” he said.
Anakin Skywalker, twenty-five-year-old PhD candidate and recent divorcé, is putting himself through school by TAing a course for new master’s degree applicants. His neediest student is Obi-Wan Kenobi - sixteen years his senior, also recently divorced, and a little miffed at having to ask someone barely older than his nephew for help uploading a PDF.
At least, that’s how it starts.

“It’s unfortunate that you’ve been having problems with Master Kenobi,” Palpatine says sympathetically. “The two of you have always been so close.”
“Yeah,” Anakin coughs. “Close.”
“Then again, I fear our dear Obi-Wan has been getting too caught up in the inflexibility of the Council. They are so strict, so unforgiving. Speaking with Obi-Wan must be especially difficult these days. How can you stand it?”
Anakin thinks about the way Obi-Wan’s beard feels against his ear, how warm his hands are when they ruffle Anakin’s hair. That twinkly-blue light in his eyes when Anakin manages to impress him, the way his cheeks flush when he’s been given a genuine compliment. How his lips look so soft–
“I really can’t,” Anakin replies miserably.
