Cities had been slowly sinking for a while, now—since long before Tommy was born. The apocalypse had been coming for quite some time, accumulating over years and years of environmental decay. Forest fires, melting ice caps, and increasingly intense hurricanes and storms.
They were safe down here in the bunker, at least. At least here he had Wilbur. Wilbur took good care of him. He kept Tommy safe and healthy and alive. Tommy couldn’t imagine what his world would be like without the man looking over him.

“Wait!!” Charlie managed to cry out as Dennis maneuvered him to lay in the center of the bed rather than on the edge. “Wait, guys—guys,” Charlie stumbled over his words, pressing his thighs together to keep the two boys away as he spoke.
Mac and Dennis froze for just a moment, ready to listen to what Charlie had to say before they devoured him whole.
