"So the Archivist ate Jon," Melanie starts, eyes fixed on weak lightbulb so they won't fall on the scalpel in her hand. "That's what you said."
"I said I am Jon. And that I ate him." The Archivist turns a page, not even looking up. "Metaphysically, for the most part."
"Sure. Whatever." She exhales out the urge to swing the scalpel in an arc, to follow through like a conductor until it meets skin. It would be so easy. "So if...if the Slaughter eats me. I'll Become. Something. Or. Or it Becomes me."
"Not exactly." The Archivist taps the rocky floor, glancing over at her. She doesn't dare tear her eyes from the lightbulb, not with the scalpel in her hand. "The Slaughter might eat you. But to really Become, you'd have to eat the Slaughter back."
