Summary
Mihawk meets the red-haired boy in his dreams when he is fifteen. The edges of the hallway they meet in are wispy, but the boy appears clear, his hair almost too vivid in contrast. Then again, this is a dream.
“Hawkeyes Mihawk!” the boy exclaims, a little too loudly. Then he smacks his face with both his hands. “Oh my god, I am so lame,” he mutters. “It won’t go like this in person. I’ll be cool. This can be practice.”
Mihawk wakes up before he can find out what the boy means, but doesn’t think anything of it as he gets out of bed to make himself breakfast—weird dreams happen all the time for no reason, after all.
It’s only when he sees the same exact boy again a week later that Mihawk begins to take note.

"I didn't know you like crosses," Mihawk remarks after a moment, looking questioningly at Rayleigh. "I wouldn't have guessed."
"It's not for me," Rayleigh replies. His face is patient and bright. "I know you like them. It's for you."
Mihawk is taken aback. "This is for me?" he asks quietly. When Rayleigh nods, Mihawk feels awe rush through him. He takes it with reverent hands and holds it. It's way bigger than the hypothetical necklace he was planning to ask for himself, and feels heavy, sturdy. It looks kind of high-end for a kid like him. "Really?"
Rayleigh buys Mihawk a kogatana shaped like a cross.

Summary
There is a small, skinny child looking up at Rayleigh and pointing a sword at him with great big yellow eyes, a ring in each of his irises like black and gold targets.
Rayleigh looks back at him, nonplussed, and pushes his glasses up his nose. "What did you say, kid?" he asks, a little awkwardly. He wasn't expecting to be confronted when he still had groceries in his arms.
"I said," the kid huffs, "I, Dracule Mihawk, challenge you, the Dark King Silvers Rayleigh, First Mate of the Roger Pirates and the World's Greatest Swordsman, to a duel!" He flourishes his declaration by jabbing his sword in the air, acting like Rayleigh might have otherwise missed it.
Rayleigh presses his lips together, trying not to laugh. "Kid," he repeats, watching with amusement as Mihawk scowls with offense, "you're like. Seven."

“I don’t have a birthday,” Mihawk says. “I’ve never had any special people, and no one really raised me. There was no one to inform me of when I was born, and it seems needless to celebrate my own birth. So I just don’t.” Mihawk’s shoulders shrug under Shanks’s hands. “No matter.”
Shanks must be making some sort of face as he grips the fabric of Mihawk’s shirt harder in his fists.
“Shanks?” Mihawk asks, not exactly uncertain.
“You—” Is this a bad idea? Oh well, it’s too late. “You can have mine then!”

Wizards are equally (and terrifyingly) competent and dangerous. Despite knowing that, Astarion has to deal with Too Many Feelings—and their consequences—after Gale is briefly out of line of sight during combat.
In which Astarion has all of the feelings in the world, doesn't know how to cope with them, and settles on sex being the answer. But Gale of Waterdeep is a smart cookie who likes talking. Sex is wonderful, yes, but talking is important.

Summary
Gale had desperately clasped Astarion's wrist, preventing him from fully wrenching away. From fleeing. And for a brief moment Astarion was ready to lash out with all of the feral fury a starving spawn had to offer.
The memory of that scorching touch was like a scar. The imprint of his lightly calloused, bare palm on Astarion's slender wrist was an invisible, white-hot brand upon his flesh. It was only Gale's wide, worried eyes and immediate surrender of Astarion's captured limb that saved him from being torn to ribbons by long-forgotten vampiric claws.
He loathed it. Touching and being touched.
People did not touch Astarion and survive.
Astarion did not touch people destined to live.

Astarion has a complicated relationship with physical touch. It brings up a wellspring of memories best left forgotten, and he doesn't even know if he could enjoy it anymore should he ever let anyone close enough to try... or five times Astarion sees Gale being held and has a lot of difficult feelings about it the one time he does it himself and knows exactly how he feels about it.

Shadowheart is the first one to ask and truly, Gale isn’t surprised, considering she’s a cleric, even Shar’s.
It’s sort of ironic, he thinks to himself. No one recognizes light like the shadows."
In which Gale notices something different about himself after the Nautiloid. He most certainly isn’t a cleric, but he still has grace clinging onto him. And when you don’t quite focus on him, he has wings, a halo and eyes of golden, holy radiance.
Includes friendship, being a plaything for the gods, protectiveness and falling in love.

Astarion smiled then. Genuinely smiled. Gale had never thought his features drawn until he saw them entirely relaxed. He was struck in particular by how young he looked.
Though Gale was immune to Astarion’s feigned charm, he was coming to realize he wasn’t nearly as safe from the authenticity the vampire hid behind it.

You’re already Gale of Waterdeep, wizard prodigy. Hells, even Leon had heard of you and he spent the last few years trapped in Baldur’s Gate with Cazador!”
He couldn’t look him in the eyes anymore. He tried, gods he tried, but he couldn’t. His gaze dropped to somewhere around Gale’s chin. “What I’m trying to say is you don’t have to be a god or Mystra’s equal or stupid Elminster to be great and to live up to your destiny or potential or…what-have-you. You already are great. I just…wish you could see it.”
His resolve finally failed and he tried to surge to his feet. Gale caught his arm, holding him in place.
“Astarion, I…”
“It wasn’t a god who helped me, Gale, it was you!” he blurted.

- there's a running bit about how much astarion loves drizzt but how he's a lil embarrassed abt his fanboy tendencies (fr he gets a lil excited abt being in the underdark just cuz drizzt is from the underdark! he knows a lil of the drow language bc drizzt is a drow! etc etc lol he manages to hide it well enough until leon straight up casually outs star as someone who collects everything he can get on drizzt hahaha);
- gale gets put in a coffin by cazador;
- victoria lives and leon (and dalyria and aurelia) say they wanna remain siblings w star;
- the one with the wind chimes gale charmed at morena's house that mystra stopped ny astarion complimented and asked to get one for his burgeoning tailor shop;
- where star toward the end excitedly calls "gale!" every time he's been surprised or delighted, even if just to get gale to look at it too;
