He tried to count the number of imperfections in the wood in front of him but it was too dark to properly see it and any time he heard something fall in the kitchen he’d flinch and lose count. Instead he tried tapping a rhythm against his knee to no avail; he was too nervous. He moved on to counting his breaths through his nose that were quick and shallow in an attempt to calm himself; anything he could to ignore the crashing coming from the kitchen.
His mother was angry, though that wasn’t new. However, today she seemed angrier than usual and that never meant good things for him. He knew that no matter what happened today, he wasn’t walking away unscathed.
