Their Friday meetups are supposed to be a time of joviality and shared company, grabbing some drinks and enjoying some good, non-work related conversation after the stresses of the days prior. Jowd would usually be recalling some story about his daughter by now, or sharing whatever water cooler gossip that's trickled over from their sister stations.
But no. Here he is, slouched against a filthy table with his hands over his eyes, sighing as though just sitting here is some great effort.

Summary
The mansion looks older than he remembers it. Weathered and beaten down, ageing just as any human would. Even from this distance, Lupin can see that the sun’s bleached the dark green roof to more of a greyish sage, and the trees along the winding road upward have become large and unkempt with age, forming a thick-knit roof of leaves and branches. It’s such an effective cover that he has to flick the Fiat’s headlights on just to see ten feet ahead of him, making sure he’s not about to crash headfirst into a startled deer or felled log.
(In some way, he wishes he would. He’d rather face a dented car than the memories waiting for him at the end of this road.)

"Are we going to die?"
Emerald's voice is quiet in the dark, but it's loud enough that Roman wakes up. He can feel Neo start to stir next to him in the bed, as disturbed by the whispered intrusion as he'd been - quickly, he turns to pet Neo's hair and soothe her back to sleep. Doesn't see a need for them both to deal with this. And as Neo settles, calmed by her partner's familiar touch, Roman waits for his eyes to adjust to where he can see the pile of blankets Neo had arranged on the floor.
Emerald should be in that pile. So should Mercury, who Roman assumes the girl had been talking to. Or -
No. He can't see Mercury's shape at all. Just Emerald's.
"Mr. Torchwick?" she repeats - quieter, yet with more urgency. "Are we going to die?"

She's content, she realizes, and when she looks over her book, she can see it on Mercury’s face, too: contentment. And if she’s honest with herself – not that honesty is one of her strong suits to begin with, but if she is – then she can admit that contentment settles handsomely on his face. Actually, everything settles handsomely on his face: the way his hair frames his eyes, the way everything about him from that hair and those eyes to his legs and weaponry carries the might of steel.
And steel or not, promise of wealth or not, she’s always thought silver was prettier than gold.
(Or, Emerald is catching - has already caught - feelings for Mercury. And if she wants advice on those feelings, she has no choice but to ask for it from the only couple she knows: Torchwick and Neo.)

The Blacksmith touches Neopolitan's shoulder. "Your thoughts are in turmoil, but I can see a picture of the life and identity you yearn for. You want to be reborn into something new and repair your broken heart. If you wish to be remade into another being, I can do that. But there is one request you still wish to make. Isn't there?"
A faint illusion of Roman blooms, courtesy of Neo's Semblance. She wants-
"-to remember him. To remember your love for him. The only thing keeping you from fully Ascending is that you are afraid to forget Roman. Yes?"
Neo reaches for the hand of the Roman she'd made, and nods. Because, after all, she loves him still. She does not want her heart to be fixed by removing the memory of how it broke. For who else will remember him kindly if she doesn't? And maybe neither of them deserve that - to be remembered kindly - but damn it, he was worth everything to her.
