“This is...very different,” he murmured, his accent thick and rolling around the words as if testing them on his tongue. “What’s gotten into you?”
“Would it really be so bad,” Jayce began, speaking against the edge of Viktor’s lapel. “To share a name along with our dreams? Because I’d gladly take yours if you’d give it to me.”
Jayce's attempts at getting Viktor out of the lab lead to the pair becoming regulars at a coffee shop near the bridge. Things go well until an innocent misunderstanding nearly throws a cog into everything they've built between them.

“I am surprised to hear you say that,” Viktor says, still stroking Jayce’s cheek as his accent thickens around each word. “You haven’t always been so understanding of my…improvements.”
Jayce shrugs.
“I’d like to think I’ve changed over the years. In more ways than one.”
Older but still on opposite sides of the ongoing war, Jayce and Viktor meet up.

“I am sorry I woke you. I was thinking of sleeping myself.” A half-truth, but one that seems to satisfy Jayce, who beams back at him.
“Right! Well the mattress is easily big enough for two so…unless that’s…” Jayce trails off and looks at Viktor, eyes wide and expressive.
Nerves. Hope. Some sort of pleading emotion. For not the first time, Viktor thinks that Jayce must be a terrible liar.
Tilting his head to the side, Viktor holds his stare. Jayce gulps audibly.
“It is fine,” Viktor says after Jayce looks away first. “We can share.”
Viktor, Jayce, and the pile of blankets on a mattress that Jayce drags into the laboratory one day early on in their partnership.

Just as Viktor learns not to flinch, Jayce stops touching him.

It’s the most honest thing Jayce has said in over a decade.
The whirring sound increases. He hears the laser firing up beside his right ear but doesn’t stop looking at Viktor’s back, hunched over at the work bench.
It resonates at a high-pitched whine for what seems like minutes before powering down.
“Блять,” Viktor says. “Fine.”
Against his better judgment, the Defender of Tomorrow pays the Machine Herald a visit on his birthday. They share a few drinks and some thoughts about a possible future.

Viktor turns the uniform over in his hands, smoothing over the wrinkles in the trousers. The buttons are diamond-shaped and hard underneath his fingers.
Leaning forward, his mother places her arm around his shoulders as she lays a white cravat across Viktor’s hands.
It’s the brightest piece of fabric Viktor has ever seen.
“Vitenka,” she whispers. “If you are going to change the world, do not ask for permission. Act like you belong and no one will question you.”
Piltover Academy of Sciences research masters student Jayce Talis isn't really studying crystallography like he told his professors. Viktor isn't even an academy student, he just has an academy uniform his parents made and very little to lose. They run into each other in a school hallway. Literally.
Based on this tweet from one of the Arcane writers that there was a backstory where Viktor's parents helped him sneak into the academy.

“Worse than last time?” Jayce posits a guess.
“It’s, eh-” Viktor shrugs. Tilts his chin this way and that. A tsk. “Bearable. I’ve endured worse hangovers in college.” he was going for a laugh, but the punchline never truly lands. Instead, Jayce’s thumb rubs softly into the back of his palm, pressing like he wants to idle the muscle mass into something new. It’s such a small thing, whatever this is, and yet it steadies the flow of his blood; the relief of loosening a valve, flicking off a pressure switch. It’s the necessary cracking-open of his breast. Jayce squeezes. Viktor allows himself the luxury of a sigh. “You shouldn’t be here.” he mutters.
Jayce reflexively shakes his head. “I took the day off.”
“We both know that’s-”
“—I could take the week.” he insists, almost a threat, a flicker of that eternal stubbornness coursing through him.

Summary
Weird. Weird. Viktor had looked so pleased just a few moments ago. Almost glowing. Maybe even happy, for a split second; the sort of thing he only ever is when one of his prototypes turns out successful. Jayce had managed to land a comment smart enough to wring a laugh out of Viktor; and he'd smiled like they were having fun, but now here's that thing again. The borders, the quiet nudging, pushing him away as if he's unable to recognize it. No one else does this to him, not anymore; not when his face is on the newspapers and his name is on everyone's mouths. It's only Viktor.
"Do you hate me?" Jayce asks, before he has a chance to process which words his mouth is forming.
It feels childish, out in the open cold, spoken like that. It feels like a stupid thought.

Jayce wonders if their friendship isn't a little one-sided, in a way.
