He sat up silently, glancing at the dark lump of his dad’s bed. He hadn’t heard anything from there in ages, so he had to be safe. Chayanne’s finger closed on the edge of his mask, propped on the table next to the bed, and he pushed it into place as he tiptoed towards the exit.
He liked the mask. The bone pressed into his face, a comforting constant pressure, and the weight of it made him feel braver. He was ready for anything, like his dad, like his papa. He brushed his hands on his shirt as he surveyed the area around the house, quiet in the early-morning hush, lit by regular lines of torches. He would need a shovel, and some water buckets.
Chayanne had a ditch dug almost as long as his arm when he heard a voice behind him.
“Chayanne, mate, what’re you doing?”
OR: Chayanne talks to his dad about his fears.
