It's weird to say it so plainly when it has always just been an odd feeling he had, never a fully conscious thought, but he had always thought that if he was the one getting dirty, the one splashing around in pain and blood, grime up to his knees, Archie wouldn't have to touch any of it.

He knows how to find metaphors now, had spent hours bent over Jughead’s novel, wondering what this or that sentence really meant, like if he managed to decode it, he would have the key to Jughead himself, would know him inside out again, like he did when they were kids and it was like there was nothing separating them, not even flesh or skin, like they were the same soul that got put in two different bodies. It made him feel better, like Jughead was looking over him with a self-satisfied smile, content to see Archie trying so hard, knowing that the mystery was a good one.

Tabitha’s car has brusquely and without warning, refused to start this morning, and of course, this being Riverdale, her mechanic (Betty in her shop class) had told her she has no idea when the piece she needs to fix the car will arrive. Only the memory of the interminable wait she has to suffer through any time she tries to order something online had kept Tabitha from making an unnecessary snippy comment to Betty. It was like Riverdale was hidden in a hidden pocket of rural America where FedEx trucks drove by without noticing there was a town there.
Or, the few rides that are given that week.
