Wei Wuxian smiles mindlessly until Lan Wangji tilts his head with the quirk of an eyebrow. The smallest quirk. Then Wei Wuxian is clearing his throat and looking to his feet. It’s still awkward. New. This dynamic. Despite how natural it feels. In Wei Wuxian’s mind, it was only ever a possibility in his dreams. Never in real life. This is real life, though.
“Wei Ying,” Lan Wangji says again.
“Lan Zhan,” he says back. “I can come back if you want your privacy.” The words are out of his mouth before he even has the chance to process them. “I don’t mind.”
“Hm. Join me.”

“We hear that His Excellency might be married by summer’s end,” the merchant’s wife says and Wei Wuxian freezes, his heart in his throat. “The Gusu Lan sect has been buying enough red silk and brocade that the merchants in Caiyi can’t satisfy the demand.”
He feels himself grow brittle inside, like a flick of a finger to his temple might make him shatter. His ears are ringing.
