“Jesus fucking hell,” Silas says as he pulls away, and he’s grinning wide enough that his face creases in such familiar ways it makes Deb’s chest hurt. “I didn’t think you’d ever.”

“Perhaps we should have both been men.” Kathleen supplies.

    “Captain and first mate.”

“We would have been sworn enemies.”

    “We would have never met.”

Kathleen pauses and settles her entire weight on Oriana, knowing that she is strong enough to hold the both of them up. “That's right. You would have gone North and I, South. We would see each other only briefly at balls and banquets and I would have wondered about you. But the world is too vast.”

“Are you a very jealous man?” Wilson blinks up at him. Shackleton has lingered in the wardroom to make sure he was alright. His fortifying hands have ended up on the narrow slope of his shoulders, thumb sliding over the pulse point between his fine collarbones.

Shackleton laughs. “I have never needed to be.”

Wilson offers him a smile, moon waxing into a crescent.

Little caught and held Jopson’s gaze for a long, vibrating moment: there was want there, but that was nothing new. Jopson’s comeliness was known amongst the men as cold was known, as homesickness. A shared discomfort, to have something so lovely and unattainable amongst them—at least Crozier often told him so, especially when his own mouth was too full to answer.

    But now Little rose abruptly.

“Sir, thank you. I truly appreciate your generosity. But I do not wish to impose upon yourself and Mr. Jopson.” He glanced uneasily at the decanter of whiskey, now mostly empty. “Truly. It is—too great a gift.”

“I could order you,” Crozier replied.

“You missed the sooty albatross, Bill. Gallant fellow. It was a shame to hold him under ether.”

“At least it did not suffer.” Wilson feels the sternum of the bird, the soft featherless spot where the breast is exposed.

Cherry blinks, as if his meaning was misconstrued entirely. “I suppose.”

Wilson slices decisively–the one incision you get, with an animal this small– from top to bottom. One must be purposeful.
