Trina smiles, sadness lingering subtly in her words. “Thank you, Whizzer. That does truly mean a lot.”
“I mean it. You deserve to feel loved, because you are. Jason and Mendell, they need you just as much you need them.”
Abruptly, Trina starts giggling to herself. Whizzer really missed hearing Trina laugh.
Whizzer raises his eyebrows. “What?”
Trina sniffles and tries to pull herself together. “Oh, I’m so sorry, it’s just… I’m getting a pep talk from my ex-husband’s boyfriend.”After years of tension, Whizzer decides to make up with Trina.

Whizzer laughs. “Are those supposed to be eggs?”
Marvin scoffs. “What do you mean are those supposed to be eggs?? What do they look like?” Whizzer laughs silently, beaming up at the ceiling, and the world lights up.
“Here, let me help you.” Whizzer steps into Marvin and takes the spatula from his hand.
Marvin groans. “Whizzer, I told you, you shouldn’t have to do all the cooking.”
“I’m not cooking. I’m stopping you from committing a crime,” he teases. Marvin rolls his eyes and lets Whizzer drape his free arm around his shoulders. “Consider it a cooking lesson.”

It’s nowhere near dark enough to have been lit yet, but there’s a softness radiating from the frosted glass that almost makes Jack want to laugh; a wet and rickety station makes a disappointing Narnia. He squints at the faded old sign attached to the lamppost, embedded into the curling, winding metal as if it’d grown around it.
