Summary
As they sat once more, Edwin realised, with dismay, that Rowland had filled in the usually empty seat next to him. His general aura of dandyism, reclusiveness, and slight insanity had rendered him an unsuitable seatmate by most of the class.
Rowland stuck out a hand. “Charles Rowland.”
I know. “Payne,” he said, and returned the handshake.
“And I don’t suppose public school boys have a first name?”

Summary
Dear Bianca,
I am writing this, not because I expect an answer, but because I yearn for one. It is the dangerous sort of yearning, the stupid sort, like the breath of space between fire and wood, just before everything goes up in flames.
Your eyes will never read these words, and your hands will never touch this paper, trace the swoops and curves of the letters like how you traced the chalk drawings on the cracked concrete streets back home. Gentle and awed, like the lilt of a melody.
Your home, at least. I’m not sure what mine is. I’m not sure if I have one at all. Sometimes I think that you took it along with you when you left.

Nico writes a letter to Bianca, long after her death.

Summary
Has he ever given Boris a gift before? They were never people who gave each other presents, back in Vegas. It hadn’t worked like that, life in the desert with Boris. They didn’t exchange, they shared - everything. Food, drinks, drugs, blankets, beds, rooms, homework, even, on the rare occasion that the spirit moved either of them to do it. Theo suspects Boris would expand on his thoughts on The Atomization of the Individual if he brought the topic up. It’s not as though the way they’d lived had always been convenient, or even particularly smart - but it had felt natural, thoughtless and instinctive and good right up until the end.
It’s hard to reconcile those memories with the knowledge that Boris had taken the painting from him.

Summary
He knew why. He wished that he did not but deep down he knew. They both did, at one point or another. Maybe not in words, but it was between them all the same. The way that they knew that the sky was blue and how the sun-warmed sand burned like fire. Theo loved Boris and perhaps, although he was a fool to believe it, maybe Boris loved him a little bit too.
