He will pick up fights with his classmates and his friends and his parents. He will run from home, go hungry, return home with his tail between his legs and spit slick bones between his teeth. He will go to nightclubs, get so high he forgets his own name, fuck a girl with a paperbag over her head. He will ask a guy for a bump, and said guy will say if you suck me, sure and Daniel will suck him, and next time he asks someone for a pinch of coke, he won’t be longing only for the drugs.
He will pick up his recorder, interview someone, a vampire or a girl with a yellow dress waiting for a boyfriend that will not come, dig the story out with a shovel, and search for it, search for whatever has been missing, all this time, the great red dragon, the void of existence, the answer they have all been looking for, the key, the quiet.
And then he will meet Armand.

Summary
The next painting on the screen is a Correggio. Noli me tangere. They had not seen it at the museum on their visit—Armand had deftly maneuvered Louis away from the room it was exposed in. Louis’ tongue tastes an echo of stale blood, semen, and ash. Lying down on the sofa in front of him, Armand’s hand mirrors Christ’s in the painting, index pointing up to God’s eternal fury where he will ascend to. The memory pulls his bones into place, foam slowly returning to its original form. Louis had but to ask, and he would kneel in the spitting image of Mary Magdalene, face lax with wonder, awestruck, horrified.
How Louis solved a heist, acquired a Rembrandt, and fed the beast sleeping next to him with a loving, scarred hand.

Summary
And yet he painted, and painted, and painted. One specific subject above all others, again and again, hundreds of times. The same man—in every position, every angle, every state of undress. Big brown eyes of the proverbial lamb, fled into the desert, lost. Daniel scrolled down the page without fixing his eyes on any specific image. He’d fed not two hours ago, and the blood turned on his stomach, close to coming back up.
One hundred forty-seven paintings had been found—seventy-four of the same man. In all of them, Armand’s face looked back at him; vacant, lifeless, ruined.
Amidst the shadows of a not-yet-gone past, Daniel and Armand chart a way forward.

“How about that one?” Daniel says in a low murmur, nodding his head towards a young woman lingering at the back of the bar.
She’s lonely, Armand tells Daniel, whispering softly into the forefront of his mind, She would be good for you.
“Good enough for both of us?” he asks, and Armand is confused. It must show on his face, because Daniel continues on, thinking, I want you to feed on her.
The idea sends a wave of heat roaring through Armand’s gut. He can picture it now: Daniel, sated and spent on some hotel bed, staring up at him with lust-fogged eyes as he sinks his teeth into the girl’s throat.
You want me to kill her, then, Armand thinks.
Daniel shudders. He glances quickly at the girl and then away again. Slowly, he nods.
“I want to share her with you,” he whispers.
