Ryuuji didn’t expect anything to happen. Nothing had happened in his other classes when he’d tried to summon, but he had to do it for dragoon training, and he had to summon something. So he drew the circle out, double checked the old book to confirm he’d drawn the nixie circle right, stood up, and lifted his hand. With a quick prayer that this worked (he really couldn’t afford to fail this damn class) he cut his ring finger as neatly as he could and let a few drops of blood fall into the magic circle.
And did not summon a nixie.

"Are you sure?" Ryūji asks, petting at his back. His hand is warm through Rin's shirt and it's not exactly helping Rin stay awake. "Because your eyes are closed and you barely made it through that without yawning." His hand slowed down as Rin’s tail wrapped around it to hold him in place and keep him close.
"Shhh," Rin says, squirming closer as Ryūji's fingers brush down over the curve of his ass, barely teasing at his tail. "Mmm, see? You know I'm right."
