“Sorry,” Sumire says pre-emptively, once the scene ends. She fights not to let her shoulders slump, but the light tap on her back from Ren tells her that she isn’t as successful as she would have liked.
“For what?” Ren asks.
Sumire’s face feels warm. “Um…” She shakes her head. “I’m not sure what it is,” she lies. “I tried to change it like how we discussed, but there’s still…” She trails off, unsure of what to say. The imaginary ring in her hand feels like a red ribbon around her wrist, keeping her tethered in place.
Sumire struggles with letting go.

“Okay, then, hi, ‘Akito Sato,’” Ryuji says.
“You really should have figured that out sooner,” Akechi says. “It’s nearly as bad an alias as Taro Tanaka.”
He might as well have applied as Taro Tanaka, the way Ryuji just accepted the application. It’d sounded good, but not too good to be true, and he shouldn’t have asked Yusuke to help him vet applicants because Yusuke had said it would be fine.
“Yu-huh,” Ryuji grumbles. This really is his own fault, and blaming Yusuke isn’t fair. It’s not like Yusuke would have expected anyone applying, no matter how generic their name may be, to actually be Goro freakin’ Akechi.

"Don't," says Akechi. His voice shakes. He wraps his arms around his middle like he's bleeding out from his core. "Go away. Don't bother with me, there's no point, I'm dead, I... fuck." He laughs, but even Ren, the curator of all things Goro Akechi, has never heard him make such a sound; despair has always taken him differently, wild and keening, barely leashed.
For a moment, Ren is back in the engine room, with Akechi crumpled on the cold floor before him, defeated and alone. Instinct screams a warning in the back of his head.
* * *
Under the effects of despair, Akechi lets slip a secret he would have preferred to take back to the grave. It's a kick in the teeth—no, it's worse, it's so much worse—but Ren can deal with it. He can deal with anything. He has to.
He wishes his friends would stop asking if he's okay.
