Summary
Nine months into their engagement, Ingrid stands in front of the large window in Sylvain’s bedroom, her heart heavy and eyes swollen from tears. It all feels like some colossal, cosmic joke at this point.
Ingrid’s second engagement ends when Sylvain dies, poisoned in his own home.
—When Sylvain is assassinated (or rather, when someone attempts to assassinate Sylvain), he and Ingrid must race against the clock to prove to his father that Sreng is not behind the plot while simultaneously uncovering the truth of who does want him dead.

“So,” Sylvain continues teasingly, “who’s the lucky lady who is going to be elevated to Duchess Fraldarius?”
Felix stares at Sylvain for a long moment and Sylvain almost stops to reconsider the question. Felix looks like he wants to both bite Sylvain’s head off and also offer a rare word of sympathy—the latter of which made Sylvain very worried for the answer to his question.
“Ingrid,” Felix finally admits.

Ingrid is incredibly, incredibly stressed. She’s got a full plate this year, physics is kicking her ass, and it’s getting harder to hold it all together. Not to mention the fact that she’s starting to question a future she can’t do anything about because it’s too late to change and too expensive to start all over. She’s in too deep. The added pressure of needing to be the model student to keep her scholarship and her RA duties are starting to get to her. And, on top of all that, her dad keeps calling her.
Thankfully her friends are there for her and Sylvain...well he seems to be around a lot these days, doesn’t he?
