Summary
To be absolutely clear, House knew it wasn't healthy.
Depending on your perspective, it wasn't even sane. But he'd tried other methods, over and over through the years in the hopes of finding something that could replace it. There was nothing. Overdosing on pain meds made him too removed, anti–inflammatories did very little apart from relieving some of the particularly miserable winter nights, psychedelics, while delightful, rendered him unfunctional, and everything else (he could say this confidently, he'd done it all) was a complete bust.
He needed something to ease the raging agony in his leg. This was as good as any other option.
