It isn’t a shout that wakes Amanda, nor a sharp intake of breath from beside her in their bed. The room is quiet and still; too quiet, too still.
The bedsheets are cool next to her, they’ve been empty for a while.
Every night for the past week Amanda has woken to find Sonny sweat-soaked and pale, his expression haunted, his nightmares clinging to him. She has held him close, whispered reassurances to him, let him cling so tightly there are finger bruises on her skin - another thing for him to feel guilty about in the cold light of the morning - and he has fallen back into a fitful sleep with her voice in his ear and her lips against his brow.
His absence rattles her.

She looked taller than she was, and he supposed she was. Her heels added another couple of inches to her height, and she didn’t stumble when she walked in them. But it wasn’t just the heels that added height to her. No, there was an air of confidence about her that he had only seen return recently, the way that she carried herself like how she used to. She was no longer carrying the weight of the world on her shoulder, holding the burden of guilt.
