Summary
The gun feels heavy in her hands, her skin tight on her body, and she doesn't feel like she's a part of the world around her anymore. She walks down the road, her feet carrying her further and further from everything she’s ever known.
She can hear screaming around her, explosions, and other noises that she’s only ever heard in her nightmares, but she just keeps walking.
Sometimes, she hides in fields or behind trees, houses, and cars, anywhere she can, so the things don’t see her. The things that were once people but aren’t anymore. She walks, and she hides, and she sleeps. She vaguely recalls eating food of some kind and drinking water from sinks that still run, but if you asked her when, she wouldn’t be able to tell you.
It takes nearly a month, but she finally reaches Nashville and stops.

“Tess…’ Joel stalls his movement, confused, and tries to pull back.
She holds him to her, legs wrapping around his waist and ankles locked at his back. “Don't stop. Just give me a second; it's okay,” she says. He looks at her face: her eyes pinched shut, a tear sliding down her cheek, and her jaw clenching tightly. He feels a wave of shame wash over him.
“Tess, I'm so sorry. I hurt ya. I thought…”
“No, it's not your fault, Joel, it's just I've never...”
“You've never…” He gapes, his eyes wide. Holding her hips firmly in place as she tries to pull him back in, he looks at her face, “ Tess, are you a virgin?” She opens her eyes, and Joel can see the answer plan in her swirling jade depths. “But you were married before.”
IE: Joel and Tess, set in my Ellie of Green Gables universe, get together for the first time, and everything is not as it seems.
