Summary
When her brother had finally left for the sea-house, Fritjof had grabbed her hand desperately and promised to write. He had still been considered a child, but her parents had become stricter on him about covering his face. They’d fought viciously before he’d left, but Fritjof had refused to give her details. Eivor could not see his face when he promised, but she knew his voice, and had thought he’d meant it.
But no letters had ever arrived, and now Eivor was on the threshold of adulthood herself.
The shells were his apology, she decided; his fondness coming out all at once. Once they had both crossed through that door — Eivor gone home and Fritjof to his new wife — it was unlikely their paths would cross. It was only a childhood affection, regret that they would likely never meet again, that moved his hand.
Eivor prepares for her arranged marriage. Everything is going to be fine.
