    Summary

“You okay there?” Steve asks, his eyes focused on the prototype on his work station, his glasses slipping off the bridge of his nose.

“Why wouldn’t I be?” the man answers sardonically.

It takes everything in Steve not to freeze up at the sound of that voice. He’s never heard it directed at him before, but there’s no confusing it with anyone else’s – Bucky Barnes has that sort of voice, the kind you can’t forget, the kind you can’t mistake.

When Bucky Barnes randomly comes to him to get his arm fixed, Steve isn't sure what he was expecting. For them to become friends – and possibly more – definitely wasn't it.

Steve swallows hard, or tries to; his throat’s too damned tight.

“You,” and Steve’s hands are brands, are vises against the wound where it’s spilling, where Bucky ran and leapt where Steve hadn’t even thought to look, where it’s Bucky’s body that’s failing, Bucky’s artery that’s leaking too fast to rightly heal, and it should’ve been Steve.

    It should have been Steve.

    Summary

I’m sorry, Steve. I’m sorry that I’m not him.

Bucky still sees more of the Winter Soldier in the mirror than Steve could ever dream of finding in the whole of him. Bucky still views his actions, his thoughts, his worth through the lens of repentance. Bucky still sees himself as damaged goods, as less-than, as undeserving of Steve’s love because he’s not the man it’s meant for.

And Steve can’t fathom it. Can’t see how Bucky misses not just that Steve loves all of him, all that he’s been and all that he is and all that he’ll ever be, but more than that: what Steve doesn't understand is how Bucky misses just how much he isn’t the Winter Soldier, anymore. How much—regardless of Steve, outside of deserving and getting and feeling and want: how much he is the Bucky that he’s always been.

And that’s not ever a thing to apologize for.

It's not a mark or a thread that distinguishes a soulmate; instead, it's a physical sensation, a bio-resonant connection—a rhythm to your breath, a cadence in your blood, the echo of an extra pulse inside your chest that proves your heart's not quite beating by itself, anymore; that it was always waiting for a matching set of notes to make a melody, and now it's singing, now it's soaring. Now you're whole.

But when what you've got is a pair of tricky lungs, faulty blood, and a bum ticker, it doesn't matter how strong your soul is: the harmony will barely rise above a whisper, the resonance will almost always strike too weak. So it's no one's fault, really, if a person misses the fact that his soulmate's standing right in front of him.

It's no one's fault if it takes the better part of a century to finally see.

    Summary

A few years out of the ice, now, and Steve’s adjusting to the modern world. He likes Thai food. He hates discrimination and inequality and also the subway at rush hour. He’s learned to live his life, generally, and is fairly content with what he expects tomorrow will bring.

He does not, by any means, expect James Buchanan Barnes.

Because James Buchanan Barnes is an Army Major sitting in Tony’s lab for a fitting of a Stark prosthetics prototype, and he is the most beautiful man, no: the most beautiful human being Steve has ever seen. And suddenly, Steve has to square with falling in love, hard and fast and all-consuming, with a person who fits into Steve’s life, who curls around Steve’s soul like he was made for it, and who might break Steve’s heart without ever meaning to, just because he’s a normal, precious, mortal man—and the serum quite likely made Steve something else.

Or: Steve Rogers never thought he’d live past 25. Now, he has to make peace with quite possibly living a hell of a lot longer, and losing the love of his life in the process.
