Summary
“The young princess’s departure for Ise has been postponed again,” Hiromasa said thoughtfully. “Everything was ready, but they’ve been forced to reschedule.”
“For what reason?”
“Impurity. A maid close to her has died. The departure has suffered delays for well over half a year now. It’s a worrying omen. They were sure that this time she would actually leave, but lo and behold.”
“Why all the delays?”
“Impurity, every time. She barely makes it to the ritual purification in the Kadono River, when someone dies and they have to start all over again.”
“‘Dies?’”
“Come to think of it, it’s been going on for a long time now,” Hiromasa frowned. “This year, it seems, more young people have gone missing than in previous years, but things became notably unusual only in the last month. Since we headed to Nara, eight people have gone missing or died, and there were another six before that. Sometimes it happened several nights in a row, and most of them were connected with the priestess.”
“How interesting…” Seimei drawled. “Why didn't you tell me sooner?”

At last, they reached the girl’s room. There was a bamboo lattice affixed to the doorway. The old man unfastened it with an embarrassed look on his face and explained apologetically:
“I mentioned that she was trying to escape, so we had to…”
The girl lay behind standing screens next to a small brazier, and didn’t show even a trace of interest in the newly arrived. Aromatic smoke and the scent of medicinal herbs filled her entire room.
“Kyoko,” the old man called softly, “daughter dearest, here are some learned people from the capital, they came to help you.”
The girl did not even bat an eyelash and continued to stare at the ceiling. Her face was very pale and might have passed for beautiful, had it not been for her equally pale lips. They were indistinguishable from her skin and gave her entire complexion a tinge of the cadaverous. Hiromasa shuddered.
“Lady Kyoko,” Seimei called her quietly, “can you hear me?”

Summary
Ever since olden times, our village has had a contract with the clan of the mountain gods. The laws of nature dictate that only boys can be born to them, and there are no women. So in order to maintain their clan, they take as wives girls from our village. There, they become loving wives of the mountain gods, look after their homes, feed them, bring up their kiddies, and of course, keep an eye on our village, too. They say these used to be wild, barren lands long ago, but now that’s something of the past. In our village, there’s food even during the driest years, and that’s all thanks to our wonderful godly wives and the gratitude of their husbands towards their in-laws.
