Now, though. He doesn’t seem young now. Lydia thinks maybe he hasn’t seemed young since she opened the door to his room and saw him standing there with a split lip and a bloody cut down his cheek. Since the hollow confession — death doesn’t happen to you, Lydia, it happens to everyone around you — and everything that came after it.

That was two months ago. She hasn’t seen him since.

    “Your hair,” she realizes abruptly.

If he were smarter and more inclined to self-preservation he would have set this task to his dad, who has a success rate of 100% for teaching people how to drive a manual transmission. In fairness, his dad has only taught one person — Stiles — but that’s still one more person than Stiles has taught. And starting with Lydia kind of feels like starting a new video game at the boss battle.

It’s just as well that Stiles is an idiot with no self-preservation instincts.

"Humans have a reflex," she says in a small voice, staring through her palms. "It prevents them from drowning until the last possible second. The survival instinct is so powerful that it overpowers the breathing instinct, even when holding your breath becomes excruciatingly painful. It's called—”

    "Voluntary apnea," Stiles says dumbly.

Lydia looks up at him and nods once. Her green eyes latch onto his.

"You told me once that death happens to the people around you," she says, biting her lip. "I can't imagine how it must have felt to be in that ice bath…but can you imagine how it felt to be the one holding you down?"

“I still don't get why we're risking our necks for this guy,” says Malia. “Didn't you say he tried to kill you?”

“That was before,” Scott says diplomatically, as Stiles says, “That's what I said,” although he's mostly joking.

The highway races beneath them. It's still a couple hours to the Mexican border. The scenery has been fairly uniform so far — mountains and badlands, the occasional grove of trees. No traffic. Stiles can’t decide if that’s luck or a bad omen.

“He's our friend,” Scott adds. Stiles doesn't look at him through the rearview, because he knows Scott would be giving him that disapproving look. “And he needs our help.”

“Do you even have any nice and soothing words in your repertoire?” Stiles asks, holding still while McBroody shines a light into his eyes. “Or is it only me who they let you loose on?”

“I actually just downloaded a new set of comforting phrases to use on patients this morning but I haven’t had a chance to listen to and internalize them yet. I do know how to say, Good news: you’re not dead, and We only need to take off one of your legs, though.”

OR, the one where Stiles keeps ending up in the ER and Derek almost gets brain damage from so much stupid.
