Summary
Caitlyn has returned to her study a few more times since her first visit. Twice under the guise of official business — but she prefers the later night hours, stalking shadows like a particularly unwanted dog. They talk about protocol, grief, and Caitlyn once admits (smiling in vengeful sorrow) that it was her own inaction that led to her mother’s demise.
Ambessa notes that she never once presents herself out of uniform.
( Ambessa and Caitlyn enjoy a... transactional relationship. )

Summary
Isobel stares past the pale blur of Aylin’s face, up to the moonlit sky. It has taken her a month’s worth of learning how to feel something bordering on human, and still she feels wholly undeserving of Selûne’s grace. If she cannot expel the rot within her, then what use is she next to a demigod? It is as though death has done little more than affirm whatever anxieties had swelled within her even before things had gone to utter shit.
Aylin, an untouchable star blazing through the sky; Isobel, who rests six feet below the cold earth. Father always did claim they were galaxies apart from one another. Now, she wonders if he was right all along.
( If the cleric looks into the darkness, something else looks back. She should have remained dead. )

Summary
Orin’s eyes are pale stones that glitter in the dark. She does not blink often, barring dramatic effect and the pretense of humanity. Minthara maps the tendrils of blood-red ink that flow through Orin’s skin and hates herself for finding it enchanting. Orin is beautiful in the way that a burning building is the shape of freedom, beautiful in the way that a mercy killing is righteous, beautiful in the way that an apostle loves their god.
( The Absolute's Chosen roll out the red carpet for Minthara of House Baenre. )

Summary
The first time that she sees you is when you’re huddling in the corner of some dark kitchen that smells like rotting food and sour wine, but it beats the lingering scent of gore out on the streets. You tried to convince yourself about twenty minutes earlier that maybe the smell of rot could keep you grounded through your sobriety, but in all honesty, you’re about to add vomit to the list of unpleasant smells in the room.
“Oh,” she says, sotto voce, like she’d just come across some box of abandoned kittens on the street and felt the sudden compulsion to smuggle them back to her apartment, “Oh, All-mer, you look terrible.”
( The first thing, crucially, is that you are miserable. )

Her name is Minthara Baenre. She is a Nightwarden, devoted to Lolth. She is sitting in a pit of flesh pressed close against the skin of the world (too close). Her soldiers are dead. She is dead, certainly. That would explain—

Summary
What can you do with regret? So little. What can you do without it? Kafka’s repeated history is a holy scripture of it.
It’s why Kafka has dashed herself against Himeko again and again, expecting nothing different, and yet each time, it’s a new life, a new horror, a new delight.
Kafka is playing out the script in a time loop. If something goes wrong, it’s not a problem: just die and start over. She’s on her 996th, soon to be 997th, loop. And sweet, darling, horrible Himeko shouldn’t remember a thing, so she can repeat their mistakes over and over — that is, until Himeko finds a cryptic message that messes her perfect looping life up.
