Excerpt:
Yuri considers himself a grown-ass man at 26. He hasn't had a panic attack in years. He opens the door to the nurse's room with great calm, but his thoughts are still swirling back into their rightful order. Facing his own weakness is favorable to facing the reality of his job.
The man with the green scarf is perched on a stool as the nurse pokes at his forming bruise, hands hanging loose between his knees as he leans forward. Both heads turn to Yuri as he opens the door.
The way the man watches him is arresting. They're in a single room with a few curtains to accommodate multiple patients. A few info-graphics are slapped to the wall, sporting smiles and bright colors, but he doesn't feel welcome.
“I think you're okay, Mr. Altin,” the nurse informs the man, rolling her chair back and tapping quick keys on her computer.
“I figured,” Mr. Altin replies. His voice rolls like plumes of smoke, low and thick with an accent Yuri can't quite place, but that draws him somewhere closer to home.
Somewhere he absolutely doesn't want to go.
