“People liked me there,” Will says after a few minutes, staring up at the tragically blank ceiling. “In Lenora, I mean. It was- weird.”
Mike snorts, letting his head loll to the side so that he can see Will’s profile, illuminated in the early evening light, tanned skin and freckles and wide hazel eyes still staring contemplatively skyward. Mike wants Will to turn his face and look at him, wants that wide-eyed gaze on him, wants to swallow every breath that Will exhales.
At the same time, he’s not sure he’d survive something like that. He’s already barely keeping it together, just looking at him.
“It was weird,” he echoes, faintly amused. “That people liked you?”
Will’s eyes flick to him just briefly, and Mike’s heart rate increases by one thousand percent. “You know what I mean.”

Summary
Holy shit, Mike is a mess. Will looks great, though. His shoulders have filled out, obviously, and his hair is longer, but it’s parted differently, which was a great idea, Mike thinks. Will looks amazing, he has a great job, he’s probably flourishing, and fuck, Mike never should have left. He should’ve stayed in tiny, suffocating Hawkins if it meant that he could have kept his life with Will. He had tried to tell himself that he wouldn't think too much about their short-lived relationship, but Will had meant the world to 17-year-old Mike. If Mike had stayed, Will would still mean the world to him.
Unfortunately, because Mike is a stupid, awkward, embarrassment-of-a-person, he keeps staring at Will, and Will catches his eye. Mike chokes on his punch.

And now he was sitting in the back seat of the Sinclair’s old station wagon with his lanky limbs splayed out over the expanse of two of the worn seats, watching Lucas drum his thumbs on the steering wheel and pointedly not watching Will look out the window in awe.
Mike’s eyes flicked to the rear view mirror over Lucas’ shoulder, and of course. He could see Will’s huge, awestruck smile in the reflection there, and something warm settled in his chest, ready to flutter up his throat and out of his mouth in the form of a sentence that started with I and ended with love you.

The day of the Party's graduation brings on a whirlwind of emotions. Mike realizes that this is probably the beginning of the rest of his life, and he can't quite decide how to feel.
