Once, during the war, Tommy escaped the walls of L’manberg for the fun of it. That and he wanted to skip on whatever work Wilbur wanted to give him. He walked and walked till he came across those fields. Wild red flowers that stretched as far as the eyes could see.

Tommy keeps finding a field of poppies. At first, he was unnerved by it but after sleeping in the flowers once, he doesn't ever want to leave again (no one ever does).

Tucked away in his tower, the young prince watches the world move on without him, watches his family welcome two new princes into their arms, and yet reject him when he cries desperately from nightmares or shivers from a painful wound.
"Wilby?" The child had murmured, all curious and hesitant at once. He was tucked in his older brother's lap, watching as his other sibling sparred with their father. "We'll always be together, right? Forever and ever?"
Wilbur smiled. "Of course, Tommy. Forever and ever."

The first time he dies after the prison, it’s not glorious, or easy or slow. He takes an arrow to the gut, and another one in his clavicle, and he lies in the ground, slowly bleeding out for over ten minutes. He kinda wishes there was someone there; all the times he's died before, he wasn't alone.
