Summary
During Eighth year, the Mage only agrees to let Simon stay at Watford if, instead of going to classes, he focuses entirely on training and missions. By the time Baz shows up, it's really begun to take it's toll on Simon. The longer it goes on, and the more Baz and Penny learn about what exactly Simon's dealing with, the worse the situation gets.

“The Mage,” I say, Baz tenses at the name. “He cast 'Know Thy Enemy' on me so I could see myself defeating the Humdrum, but I didn’t see him.” My throat gets tight, and I stop talking.
“You saw me,” Baz fills in.
I nod. I’m not even looking at him, but I have to shut my eyes tightly to get through the terrible part. “I had my sword and I… I killed you, Baz. I’m so sorry.”

Merfolk are easy to avoid. Should you hear a familiar and unlikely voice singing, don’t follow it. Tell a teacher (for extra credit). And if you meet one, never, under any circumstances, kiss them. Simple.
All the same, it’s galling to be targeted. I’ve been marked as the hopeless sap most likely to trade everything for a kiss.
I absolutely will not be telling a bloody teacher.
During a Magickal History field trip, Baz gains the attention of a local merfolk. He knows better than to approach. Merfolk are monsters. But then again, so are vampires, and he’s had a thoroughly wretched term.

I open my eyes and see the Mage standing just inside the door, looking amused. No, not amused. There is something darker beneath the surface.

The Mage is dead and I killed him.
(Simon Snow is granted three years worth of memory on his first day back and he does everything in his heroic power to make sure that things turn out better this way. With the power of his magic and memory on his side, he will save the day, steal the kiss and get his happy ending.)
