Mary’s ghost followed him so far, and she might yet follow him down the way to DC. He’d had three blissful days of rest before she found him, screaming about what he had done to her. It took him another week to get going, to find a car and leave.
She hasn’t found him yet. But Gerard doesn’t know how long that will last. He doesn’t want to stop and find out.
After the suicide of his mother, Gerard Keay finds himself haunted by her ghost.

Kepler glances over at Jacobi and double blinks at the sight in front of him.
Jacobi’s brown skin is flushed, with tears rolling steadily down his cheeks and dripping off his chin and nose. Another small rivulet flows down his nose, beading on those full lips. Jacobi doesn’t react, or even seem aware that he’s crying. He just stares into the distance. He’d been so quiet, Kepler hadn’t even noticed until he looked over.

Willow exhaled, resting her temple against the glass and closed her eyes. Hunter didn’t believe for a second that she would fall asleep, as her body remained coiled with tension.
“He just...” She whispered. “...wanted to see this world so much.”
Hunter could see it in that smile, in those weary eyes, hear it in her heavy voice.
Willow was absorbing Gus’s burdens to lighten his load. It was quite possible she was doing the same with everyone who surrounded her.
This left her own burdens neglected.
He understood how it felt to devote your entire self to the monsters that plagued the life of someone else. It withered away every fragment of yourself that belonged solely to you.
“Like you wanted to see the rain.” Hunter reminded her.
It must be a little bittersweet for Willow too.

He’s four, thinking about all the possibilities that the future holds. He’s ten, realizing that there’s not much to the future but this, with Mary. He’s sixteen, thinking 'fuck that, I’m getting out of this place.' He’s seventeen, having just been returned home by the cops. He’s twenty-two, in his flat, knowing distancing himself is not the same as freedom. He’s twenty-five, lying next to some pretty face he’d found in one of his favourite haunts, trying to delude himself into thinking that this could be real. That this could be normal.
He lifts his head to see out into the dimly illuminated hallway and the illusion is dispelled. He’s in jail. Mary is dead but not gone. He’s trapped.
Or: Gerry is waiting for trial. Michael is his lawyer.
