“It’s not your fault,” Caitlyn says firmly and truthfully, willing Vi to believe her. “It’s not your fault.” She whispers it into Vi’s cheek, a prayer, a solemn promise, a plea, an order. “Remember that.”
Vi squeezes her wrists lightly and relaxes her grip. Tears snake down her face, charting across her cheeks and sliding wetly down Caitlyn’s palms. Warmth still lives inside of her, thrums in her, Vi’s body like a seething star in the night. Beautiful to the point of destruction. Caitlyn presses cool fingers to her face to keep her from immolation.
