It was a crazy quilt in his head: Steve, smaller and weaker, barely larger than a child, working on a radiator, railing about baseball. Safehouses in Germany, Morocco, the Caymans, Madripoor, Bucharest, Moscow. Long expanses of sand, of snow, of water. A woman’s voice, telling him softly in Russian to stay still, or the stitches would be uneven. A plane taking off over his head. An explosion in the jungle.
The thoughts weren’t always clear, and few of them were verifiable, but they all felt true. They all felt like remembering.
