“This time,” Wavelength continues, “I’m outta the shit I’d usually use to wipe your memory, cause I had to stop the fucker that saw me letting you go. I should just fuckin’ kill you, get outta town, change my name, but I can’t. I’m stuck here ‘cause I got someone relying on me, get it? It’s your fuckin’ fault I’m in this mess, and I fuckin’ hate you for it.”
The information hits Tide like a sledgehammer to a chipboard wall- he knows now he never stood a chance. He tries to tell himself that Wavelength is the worst kind of man, selfish and uncaring, but all he can think of is the fact that Wavelength chose- is still choosing- to let Tide live every time, choosing Tide over himself.
“Do you?” Tide asks, voice shaky.
“Do I what?” Wavelength spits, modulator and mask unable to hide the tremor in his voice.
“Hate me.”

Mark and Tide make out in an alleyway (I recommend reading A False Start before this, it's not 100% necessary though).

Summary
The first time Rolan brings it up is on an autumn night in senior year. They’re on the verge of greening out, so high things don’t feel real, laying on the floor of Rand’s parents’ attic.
“Y’know, I wish you were a girl.”
It breaks the silence like the tolling of a bell. The clock ticks over to three in the morning.
“Whaddya mean?” Rand asks.
“It’d be easier. Easier than living… living like this.”
Rolan doesn’t elaborate any further.

Summary
Halfway through Tide and Wavelength’s standard bi-weekly fight, some hotshot vigilante with a temper and super speed had cut in. Although preoccupied with trying to get civilians to safety, Tide could have sworn he saw Wavelength jump in the way of a blow that would've hit a young girl standing frozen on the sidewalk.
Then Mark gets injured, the vigilante reckless and overzealous.
Then, Tide makes a series of stupid decisions- and Mark rolls with it.

Summary

“Thanks.” As if he couldn't already tell. With how his head started to sink into the pillow below his head, it felt more like William was pushing him down.
“How long have you been… laying here?”
“Since… noon.” Vyncent mumbled miserably. “I was gonna leave tonight…”
But then he took a nap. And, since then, he's been motionless. William frowned.

“Rand?” He says as his face is tipped to the side, “What’s up?”
Rand narrows his eyes a little, leans in to inspect the skin above Rolan’s eyebrow. “I need to make sure.”
Rolan sucks in a breath as Rand pulls his face in the other direction to get a look at the stubble that crawls its way up his skin. “Make sure of what, man?” he says, tensing a little when Rand moves his other hand to Rolan’s shoulder to steady himself.
Rand continues his survey of Rolan’s face for a moment, at one point even squishing Rolan’s cheeks in a signal to open his mouth.
“You…” he says at length, shaking his head a little as if to clear it, “You. I need to make sure you’re… you.”

She dies on the beach, in his arms. It isn’t the first time. It isn’t even the second. “We’re trapped,” she tells him, blood bubbling up between her lips. His fingers spasm on her wound and he shushes her, his voice shaking. She draws a shuddering breath that rattles in her lungs. “It’s my turn, but it’ll be yours, next. We’re trapped here.”
