Summary
Every night before bed, she’d pray and pray, hoping for the same things:
First, she’d always be smart and have all her friends because she loved them a lot. She also wanted her family forever, and to fall in love when she was older and boys weren’t so gross and annoying. Second, she prayed that Carmy’s stutter would get better, and kids wouldn’t be so mean to him. Third, she prayed that her mom would get better, and things would be less scary. Fourth, and finally, she prayed her dad would come home so her mom and Mikey wouldn’t be so tired all the time.
(Later, Natalie would realize how adorable it was that she attempted to pray away alcoholism and a stutter, as well as manifest a happy life for her and her family with a present father. Childhood was a strange experience.)
