Summary
Bobby brought out a Lemon Pie. This was a tactful dessert choice. Cake would have been weird. It just wasn’t the kind of farewell where a cake made sense. It would have given away how strange the whole thing was. But the absence of some kind of special desert would have done that too.
Bobby knew how to keep it classy. And, god bless him- god help him, please god do something- so did Buck.

“Open your eyes,” she says. Buck feels the gentle breath of her against his cheek.
“Do I have to?” He whispers, with his mouth closed. He feels the soft huff of her laughing.
“Just open them,” she insists.

Summary
"You guess," Eddie repeats under his breath, but he sounds amused. He sets the boxes down and kicks the door shut behind him to wind through the chaos of Buck's half packed away kitchen. "You're insane."
It's so deeply fond that Buck has to smile. Eddie hooks a hand through the handle of the leash and tugs a little. Playful, it's playful and a little teasing and not forceful at all, but the collar presses into the base of his neck as Eddie reels him in, and something in Buck's mind goes blissfully silent and still.

Eddie pets him through the fabric and pictures tugging him out to say—Yes. Yes, you can help with money. Yes, get tangled up with me.
But he can’t say that. Not when, soon enough, it'll also mean saying, Yes, let’s have a—

“Eddie takes a big gulp of their shared coffee and the perfect ratio of sugar and creamer hits his tongue. When he glances over Buck is biting back a laugh, tongue against his teeth, like making the coffee the way Eddie likes it is the prank of the century. “

Summary
Evan hates Doug Kendall.
He isn’t supposed to hate anybody. That’s what love thy neighbor means. Doug isn’t actually their neighbor, he lives a few streets over, but Maddie said that when God says neighbor, he means like if the whole world was a neighborhood. Evan thinks that God should just say that he means to love everybody, then, but one time he said that and Mom and Dad made him pick out a stick from the yard and they hit him until he cried, so he doesn’t say much about God anymore.
He can’t say that he hates Doug, either. Doug is friends with Mr. Brooks, and Evan doesn’t really like Mr. Brooks, but everybody else does. He even gets to give the sermons sometimes instead of Pastor Daniel. Mr. Brooks is nice, and he pays way more attention to him than Mom and Dad do, which Evan likes, and he even gave him a Hot Wheels car once, and sometimes in school he has other little treats just for Evan, but Evan still—he just doesn’t think that Maddie needs a Mr. Brooks, is all.
or: how Evan and Maddie make it out of Pennsylvania, and Buck and Maddie build a family.

Summary
"I think we should go clubbing again," Buck announces in between Forza races. "We have a Friday in the middle of our 96, it would be perfect."
"You guys planning something?" Hen asks, coming over from the kitchen with a bowl of trail mix.
"I'm trying to get Eddie to come pick up guys with me," Buck says.
Hen's eyebrows arch high above her glasses. "Really," Hen says.
"It's more of a wingman situation," Eddie tries to explain.
"Yeah, Eddie picks the guys so I don't make stupid decisions," Buck says, flicking through menus to pick a new racetrack.
The combination of Hen munching peanuts and looking back and forth between them makes Eddie feel like he's a zoo exhibit. Best Friends, captured in the wild, still feral, exhibiting behaviors heretofore unknown to science.
"Well, good luck with - all that," Hen says pointedly to Eddie. She is definitely not talking about the video game.
