“You have come to find me predictable, then,” Chaos said. They didn’t sound exactly offended—maybe calculating, or thoughtful, or their voice didn’t reflect any feeling at all, and he was merely projecting it onto them—but Zagreus felt a chill nonetheless. He imagined Poseidon wouldn’t take well to being told he was shallow and calm, or that Aphrodite would enjoy being told she was pretty but Only In A Friend Way.
“Not, uh, exactly predictable,” said Zagreus, and was cut off as the portal finally extracted the necessary life from him and he was slurped into the abyss.

“‘Oaan li ee riiah’t aice oo.”

    “What was that?”

Harry spits blue froth into the sink. “Sounds like she’s trying to entice you.”

“Like a witch in a fairy tale?”

“Like a stray cat. You know,” he waves his toothbrush, “leave food out for it everyday until it gets used to you being around. Maybe she wants to be friends.”

Kim wraps his towel around his hips. “What would an old Seolite woman want with me?”

You kept the chatter up. Vaguely amusing anecdotes, nostalgic recollections, the sorts of things that softened up the edges of John’s temper most of the time. You all had to live with one another for another four months, and if things were going to get worse before they got better, it was as well that you eased what tension you could. You’d just got into your stride, preparing another anecdote behind your teeth, when Gideon exploded.

Granted the soup wasn’t very good, but carrots or no, that seemed an overreaction.

“Stop by the shop on the way home.”

Gideon raised an eyebrow. “What for?”As far as she was aware, the fridge was still pretty well stocked. Harrow had plenty to peck at for at least another week.

Harrowhark finally looked up again. There was a strange glint in her eye. Something glittered that portended a certifiable Nonagesimus kind of nasty that Gideon didn’t want to touch with a twelve foot pole.
“Porkchops,” she said at last. “Ground beef. Bratwurst. Red meats, ideally.”

“Feeling carnivorous, are we?” Gideon joked. Harrow did not deign to dignify this with a response.
    ---
Less than a week ago, Gideon received a call stating her mother was dead.

In an unrelated event, Harrowhark is suddenly asking for meat.
