Summary
He can almost see it. The bright light flickering, just waiting for him at the end of the tunnel. He's been traveling through this long singular path for what felt like years on end. Nothing but darkness and creepy crawlers to haunt him in his nightmares.
He can remember being on the opposite end, passing the flickering light and feeling so joyous, victorious at that. Feeling the weight lift of his shoulders, he can finally breathe again, regaining that part of his life that he once lost and yet he was side swiped.
Ending up back in that same spot he swore he would never go back to. The same dark and creepy tunnel he hated so much. The light flickering constantly shows that he's close to the finish line with each crawl his body makes. And he knows that; Dream knows he needs to keep pushing, he's right there and yet, he can't shake off this heavy feeling weighing his shoulders down.

Dream looks up and stretches, lifting a hand to the back of his head. His screen casts a soft glow on his face, and George would bet good money that either gmail dot com or his editing software is currently filling it. Or both. Dream likes the split-screen function.
“Hey you,” Dream echoes, making George smile as he nudges past the coffee table to join him.

George whipped his head around to stare at him, his eyes clear. “What?”
Dream froze, his own half-asleep haze melting away as surprise etched its way through his veins.
“Oh, hey, George.” He tried to sound casual as heat rose to his face and his ears burned scarlet. “Sorry, I thought you were sleepwalking.”
“You thought I was what?”

“What was the fight about?” It was a simple question. Dream tried not to choke on the answer.
“It was like –” A sharp breath. “I don’t even know. We were, like –” Sleeping together, in both senses. “You know our relationship is different.” You know I love him.
“Different,” his father repeated.
“Yeah.” Dream picked at the knee of his fraying jeans. “I don’t know why we were arguing.” George wanted to know what it meant when I kissed him. “It, like, started over nothing.” I said I didn’t know. “And it just spiraled into being about, like, everything.” He lashed out and I pushed back. “I don’t know. It was stupid.”

“You’re real,” he said instead. It was blunt, but he could hear his tone. It was soft, reverent, as much as it would have been if he’d let the phrase 'I love you' slip through his lips. It wasn’t just the sun; Dream was a god with horrible posture, back arched so that he could rest his elbows on his knees and look at where George was sprawled on the floor with Patches pressed up against his belly.

“Can’t really be taught, sorry. I’m like, virtuous or whatever. Saintly,” George snorts at his own words. “But you should tell me now. Since we don’t have anything else to do. I guess.”
Dream takes a breath. Glances to the counter, as if hoping the smoothie will be ready to distract George, but the blender is still whirring away. “A tattoo. I want to get one.”

There’s a certain feel that follows with awakening on a special day. The childish whimsy reflected in waking up on Christmas, or opening your eyes to the knowledge you’re a year older.
Dream opens his eyes wrapped around his boyfriend, smiling sleepily within seconds. He gives him a soft squeeze, breathing him in. The action prompts an abrupt end in the purring Dream hadn't noticed rumbling in George’s throat, and George hums. “Dr’m,” he grumbles.
“Morning,” Dream mumbles, pushing his face closer to George’s shoulders. His tail thumps against the mattress twice in tandem. “Happy birthday, baby.”
