The face of the boy dropping off their delivery, running that errand for them in their countryside dream, or tapping a cigarette past the school gates in broad daylight. How disappointing then that his lips must taste like smoke.

Buck can feel the heat of a blush burning against his skin. He shrugs, shoulders brushing his ears. Their bodies bracketed the center of the bed in an identical curvature, breaths perfectly out of sync. Buck inhaling John’s exhale, sighs out oxygen for him.
“So’d those kids invite you back for the next game?”
Buck smiles, and wonders again at the steadfast belief John held that Buck was just as likable and good as himself. “Nah.”
“I would have.” John says softly, “I’d teach you how to catch that baseball Buck.”

To be acknowledged for his natural attractiveness and his instinctive knowledge of how to amplify it has always felt good, but it’s never been something that pulled him. The last person he expects to see when he walks into detention is Gale-fucking-Cleven.
It’s not that he doesn’t like the guy; it’s just that he finds how perfect he is to be incredibly annoying. Him and his cheerleader girlfriend both look liked they walked right out of a literal magazine. And the fact that he’s the student body president, captain of the football team, and has been Homecoming King for the last two years was just doing too much in John’s opinion. Not to mention that blinding movie-star smile, with those two rows of flawless white teeth John swears he’s seen literally twinkle and a fan club to match those Hollywood-worthy good looks.
Well… now that he thinks about it, you could probably say he doesn’t like the guy.
