Summary
Sometimes Veritas would catch sight of him through the shop's glass doors in the morning, Aventurine smiling and waving at him as he passed by on his way to the IPC building. His phone frequently pinged with incoming texts throughout the day, to the point where Veritas had to turn notifications off whenever he was with a customer. It was a nuisance. A distraction. It made him think of Aventurine when he should be focusing on not slicing his finger off with a wire cutter.
And yet, Veritas did not ask him to stop.
Veritas owns a flower shop. Aventurine works at the building across the street. This is the story of how they fall in love.

Summary
“Come on, my dear doctor. You’ve had a few too many cups,” Aventurine murmurs, and his face lights on fire with the endearment. Calm yourself, he chants like a mantra, but he grows weak as Aventurine guides his steps out of the establishment and into the surrounding hallways of the hotel. It’s quiet, the music dimmed to practically nothing, and it makes him all the more conscious of it all.
It burns where Aventurine touches him, and he is hyper aware of every movement made. He isn’t used to this. Veritas could count on one hand the number of people who he has been held by like this. And this is barely an embrace, Aventurine is only helping him up, yet Veritas clings like a child, like a small bird, seeking warmth. It’s illogical.

In the dead of the night, with Ratio already asleep in his arms, Aventurine’s eyes stared at the bleak darkness of a familiar bedroom as he thought about the lives, the old and the young and the barely adults out there that the human being in his arms had saved, was saving, and would save in the future.
“You incredible man,” Aventurine found himself whispering, arms tightening around Veritas’ body to pull him even closer before pressing a kiss on top of his head.

As he walked among the other — legit — students, he couldn’t help but notice how easy it seemed to pretend to fit in, to be one of these many desperate students losing nights over an exam instead of a high-stake gamble.
“Ah! Scholar King, bless us!” a crying voice caught his attention. The Scholar King.
It took a moment for Aventurine to remember why that epithet sounded familiar, and when it did, he couldn’t help the chuckle escaping his lips.
Blessed Gaiathra, he was sure Ratio hated this tradition.

Ratio slipped his arms around Aventurine, pulling him close. He leaned down so he could bury his head in the crook of his neck, the cold skin a stark contrast to the warmth he was so used to. A second passed before Aventurine reciprocated. It was only now, when Ratio couldn’t see him, that he felt trembling hands embrace him back, and those lips stuck in a sly smile began to fall as he was pressed against his shoulder.
“Do not thank me for anything,” Ratio mumbled, “I failed.”
“Whatever you say, Veritas,” Aventurine responded. It was muffled, but he could still hear the bitter chuckle that came afterwards.
When they pulled away, Ratio pretended not to notice the damp stain on his shoulder.

After failing to secure Penacony for the IPC, Aventurine is sentenced to death. Ratio manages to secure a visit with him the night before his death day.
