Auston really looks at him this time. Takes in Mitch's sunken in eyes, tired look and bowed over posture. Head down half the time, fingernails picked at until they're red, inflamed and bleeding. He can't say anything, his own face reflects it. His own nails bitten down, manicures be damned. He feels it, too, feels the immense weight of loss, of failure. Directionless, hopeless, adrift. Decades of failure rests on their shoulders and he can't help but collapse under the weight of it. He figures Mitch is feeling the same thing.

He knows the feeling of the sun on his skin as he lies on the chair in the backyard of his house, as he feels the pools cool air right next him, nearly cooking him down just with that. He knows the feeling of the crowds roar running through his body, as he yells in celebration of his goal, his mouthguard hanging halfway out of his body as he puts his hand up behind his ear, mocking the crowd. He knows the feeling of losing, of winning, of everything involved with it.
He knows the man standing in front of him better than he knows anything.
