Summary
“We are not hugging the evil out of Zuko, Sokka.”
“No, I have an even better idea.” There"s a lopsided grin playing across his features and a determined glint to his relentlessly blue eyes. It looks stupid to Katara. In retrospect, it really should have looked stupider. “What Zuko needs—” His voice becomes low and monotonous as the history lessons Gran-gran liked to dish out, and he whips a seal-walrus mustache from his pocket and plasters it onto his face with embarrassing levels of enthusiasm. “—is therapy.”
“Where the hell did you get that mustache, Sokka?”
—
(Or, the Gaang attempts to give Zuko therapy. Zuko just wishes Sokka would stop interrogating him with a mustache.)

Summary
“Can’t,” Zuko grunted out, just as Katara pushed the cold compress closer. “Father says that if – if it’s my fault, I have to fix it myself. Asking for handouts after a tantrum is dishonorable.”
He’d said as much before, when the worst thing he’d shown up with was enough cuts on his knees to border the wrong edge of questionable. Sokka had never thought twice about the explanation. He knew that Toph’s parents had cut her off from time to time. Rich kid problems at their finest.
This time, though, Sokka took a good, hard look at the burns on Zuko’s arm. And he did something he’d never done before: he asked follow-up questions.
“How’d you get that burn, Zuko?”
Or, Zuko"s made a habit of texting Sokka when he needs to be patched up. But when said patching up only ever happens in the middle of the night when his dads aren"t home, there"s only so much Sokka is willing to not question for the sake of someone he doesn"t even know that well.

Bookmarker's Notes
Witty, sharp, and hilarious with a satisfying smattering of angst. Quality writing. A lot of the humor comes from how bizarre yet on point Sokka"s internal monologue is. Great world building for a one-shot, particularly if you"re a fan of high school AUs.

Summary
After the events of War Crimes, Sokka and Zuko have escaped Zhao’s warship and are fleeing across the Earth Kingdom. As well as unfamiliar terrain, they have to navigate their shared trauma, work out where they fit into the war, and their place in each others lives.
Sokka is aware that being friends with the enemy is going to bring complications, but he probably should have guessed that being friends with Zuko in particular, was going to be a bit like dunking your head repeatedly into a bucket of angry Fire Ferrets.
Katara is also grappling with the confusion of befriending an enemy, something that doesn’t prove as difficult as she had expected with the bond of shared, furious grief bridging old wounds. (Learning a new way to look at her bending doesn"t hurt either)
Azula, struggling with the Fire Lord’s mistrust, encounters a few nasty surprises and has to make some difficult decisions. Luckily, she is a great deal better at making sensible choices than her brother.
Her father may have made a slight tactical error.

Summary
Book one ends with two major diffrences: 1. Sokka went on the mission with Hahn (it did not go well) 2. Zhao survives the North Pole and that proves unfortunate for everybody (except Zhao, obviously)
Imprisoned on Zhao’s war ship, Sokka and Zuko have to work together to survive. They are not very enthusiastic about this prospect.
And they argue.
A lot.

Bookmarker's Notes
I"m not sure how the author manages it, but this fic has some of the best and most hilarious Sokka and Zuko dialogue interspersed between intense, gripping, and absolutely horrific torture scenes. The developing relationship between Sokka and Zuko is fantastic - realistic and well paced - and the author clearly has a well developed understanding of human psychology. The portrayal of the main characters - their reactions, emotions, the ways they change - feels deeply human, which isn"t an easy thing to manage when writing about serious trauma.
Zhao and some of the OCs are extremely sick individuals in this AU, but it"s well done. The OC who helps Sokka and Zuko escape is humanized to the reader, and given enough backstory and internal conflict to be interesting.
My one (very minor) criticism is that occassional Britishisms leak into the dialogue between the main characters. The standard American accents they have in the show are so ingrained in my consciousness that it feels a bit unnatural and can disrupt my immersion, but this happens far less than in other fics I"ve also read and enjoyed.
I adore the bonding through trauma trope, and this fic epitomizes all that is good about it, and more. It also adds some much-needed depth, grit, and darkness to the Avatar world. This is an absolutely amazing work with top-knotch characterization, angst, and intensity for miles. Highly recommended if that"s your thing.

Summary
The man’s voice once again broke him from his thoughts; “In my dreams I see them tortured by Fire Nation soldiers. I see my entire culture wiped from the South, our footprint upon the ice shelves gone as though we never existed, our connection with the spirits and our ancestors forgotten.” He was silent for the briefest of moments, then, “You’re Fire Nation, aren’t you?”
Zuko rolled onto his side, facing the wall, scar pressed into the arm that cushioned his head. “Once, maybe.”
“Answer me this, then; when will this war see it"s end?”
Zuko, recalling the fire that had burned in Azula’s sunlit gaze the day she’d caught up to him, chose not to respond.
