Summary
“It’s okay, don’t worry,” Christopher told them, “I’ll stay with you guys until someone can come get us. I’m Christopher.”
“Isabella,” the older girl said, “and this is Quique and Mia.”
The two first graders gave shy waves. Christopher gave them both a kind smile, the one he had seen his Buck use when working with children before.
“Nice to meet you all. We’ll be okay. My dads are firefighters and I bet they’re on their way here right now to help us,” he told them, and that seemed to brighten the faces of all three of the other kids.
-----
When a fire breaks out at Christopher's school, Christopher finds three students stuck inside the building with no way of escape. He stays with them, knowing that help is on the way, because his dads taught him everything he needs to know to survive a fire. He can be brave, like his dads, until they come to his rescue.Series

Summary
Eddie was sitting on the floor of the hallway with his back against Christopher’s bedroom door. His eyes were dry, streaky tracks staining his cheeks where he had cried so much he ran out of tears. Through the closed door, he could hear sobbing, his son crying out for the one person who wasn’t there. He felt useless, wanting nothing more than to give Christopher exactly what he wanted but powerless to do so. He wrapped his arms around his legs and rested his head on his knees, curling up impossibly small.
Buck was missing. It had been twelve months since anyone last saw him.

Summary
“You have a good partner, Eddie.”
Eddie flushes, because he knows that her partner isn’t the same as work partner. It’s an assumption they had never bothered to correct at Christopher’s school, mostly because it made it easier for people to understand why Buck was around so often, versus best friend or colleague or legal guardian in case I die.
“Yeah,” Eddie responds, his voice thicker than he expected. “He’s the best partner I could ask for.”
Or: Christopher hosts a sleepover, Buck helps, and Eddie realizes he hasn’t been a single dad in years.

Summary
As Eddie lays on the hot pavement bleeding out, his eyes locked on Buck’s bloody face, his hand reaching out towards him, what washes over him isn’t his hard-earned stillness nor is it shock.
It’s clarity, edging slowly into focus from off-stage.
And when he wakes up in the hospital bed and registers a soft, slim hand in his, he thinks, "no, that’s not it".
