"I always thought Crash seemed like a good time, is all."

There's a beat of quiet. Marty can count on one hand the amount of times he's managed to surprise Rust and he wasn't expecting to score just now.

"The fuck gave you the idea that Crash was having a good time?"

"Didn't say he was havin' a good time. Said he seemed like he was a good time. There's a difference."

The only reason he’s even in the damn registry is because it’s required when you pass the bar, like a background check, fingerprinting; he literally hasn’t spared it a single thought since he bared his forearm for the NYSSR representative and looked away while they took the scan. Soulmates are something that other people worry about, normal people, the masses, like marriage and kids and mortgages in the suburbs, and besides, Harvey’s not the sort of person who wants a life partner.

Which doesn’t explain why he’s rushing across town right now, but – he can’t leave his own soulmate rotting in Rikers three days before Christmas. It’s a point of professional pride.

She does love him; she is sure of it. But she loves him the way she loved Rome when she spent a year there her junior year in college, transfixed by its ancient, terrifying beauty. Even after six months, when the sharp edges of the city’s unfamiliarity grew rounded and soft, she always knew it was not home. He loves her, too, in the bracing, merciless way that the North Atlantic loves the shore, because geography has thrown them together and now they can’t be rid of one another.

“You’ve made it real clear you’re spoilin’ for something,” Rust says, “and in the absence of your usual outlets have decided to take your bullshit out on whatever’s nearby. Now are you meanin’ to turn this into a real fight, or you just needin’ to let off some steam?”

Rust-as-Crash was never something Marty could prepare for.
