Summary
Maddie turns around, ready to leave, reaches for the doorknob and–
And then she freezes again because she hears it, the sound that made her realize she wasn’t alone in the first place. Only this time she can place it.
Crying.
She drops her hand, turns on her heels, and steps further into the loft. There’s no one in the kitchen or the dining table, which is as much as she can see from there. Then she takes a few more steps, her head whipping around, looking for the source of the sound.
When she finds it, Maddie’s heart all but plummets to the floor.
On the steps of the loft sits Eddie, hunched over, hiding his face in the soft fabric of what looks like one of her brother’s sweaters. And he’s crying.
No. He’s sobbing. An onslaught of gut-wrenching sobs tearing through his chest with so much force that his whole body shakes with it.
Oh, Eddie.***
Or while Buck’s in a coma, Maddie finds herself at the loft one afternoon. There, she finds a heartbroken Eddie and they have a moment.

Summary
“Thinking back, none of my relationships worked out, my heart was never truly in them. It felt like I was playing a part of anyone but myself.” The tears have finally managed to slip out, Eddie turned his head, hiding.
Turning back towards Hen, tears welling in his eyes, “I don’t know what's happening.”
Hen looked at him, and thought carefully before she spoke, “I think you do Eddie.”
Silence fell between them, Eddie wiped the last of the tears away, “How did you know you were gay, I mean a lesbian? Did you always know?”
Hen smiled softly, waiting for that question, “I know this won’t be helpful, but I’ve always known. Let me explain.” Eddie nodded his head.

Or Eddie and Buck get split up at work and Eddie makes some realizations about himself, who is is as a person and who he's in love with.

Summary
Buck lets out a heavy sigh, and when he speaks, his voice is unsteady. “I’m starting to think that… maybe I’m not meant for the things that I want. Maybe it’s time for me to manage my expectations.”
Manage his—jesus. Is that what he thinks? Does he think he’ll never get to be happy?
His words act as a crowbar, cracking Eddie’s rib cage open to expose his heart, beating to the sound of Buck’s name. Buck Buck Buck Buck Buck Buck Buck. Eddie wants, nonsensically, to carve out all his insides to make room for Buck to crawl inside where it’s warm and safe and where Eddie can protect him from the relentless, persistent hurt that is Buck’s own insecurities and deep-rooted trauma.
(Or, Buck thinks he'll never get his happily ever after. Eddie begs to differ.)
