Summary
For the Sukeve Secret Prompter Fic Exchange I worked from a prompt that asked to expand on a paragraph from strollingwolf's fic you can't escape the sea that cradled you (one of my favourite Suki character studies!) In that paragraph, Suki imagined an alternate life for herself where she had never married Nish, embraced her lesbianism as a young adult and met Eve in less complicated circumstances.
I highly recommend reading that before diving into my interpretation because it references a few specific ideas.

Summary
Suki believes that strict rules must govern society in order for it to function. She has lived by these rules for her entire life, weaved through them, twisted them to her advantage and played the long game of high society life with excellent results. She is a winner.
Eve has never won anything. She scrapes by, with the help of friends that have replaced a lost family. She has her wit, her health and spirit enough to pull herself through difficult times. She adapts. The future offers new dreams, and rules will soon be rewritten.
Both women have forged a path for themselves either inside or outside their expected roles. But when they meet, everything they knew (or thought they knew) about the world shatters, and they must race, desperately towards a place impossible- into the midnight sun.

Suki couldn’t help but let her eyes drift back to the pin, the one with three stripes. “Is that the bisexual… flag?” Suddenly she sounded so unsure, so hesitant, and she hated herself for it. Her voice faltered at the word bisexual, and no amount of coughing would get rid of that lump in her throat, she knew. “I’m sorry… my daughter is—is bisexual, so…”
“Yes, it is! Two of these pins then?” The girl asked and dug into her large tote bag without waiting for an answer.
“No— actually,” She paused and looked up from her bag. “Could I get a… lesbian one?”

Freedom. It was such an alienating feeling, to feel the rush of being as free as her curls in the wind. After a lifetime without it, to be able to touch it with her fingers, as it was that close, as if it was a material thing – like touching Eve’s cheek after a kiss.
