    Kazutora remembers the last words he’d said to Mikey before he left with Baji to steal a bike for his birthday, his voice hollowly echoing through the damp summer night. He remembers the air fracturing around them, an initial crack in time leading back to the end, and Mikey’s smile like a broken thing on his lips.

    He’s thought of Mikey often after that night in 2003, as often as he’s thought of Baji, and he wonders if memories soften in time, maybe fall apart a little. They probably don’t.
