Summary
Ghost didn’t know who he was outside of being a soldier. He hadn’t lived a civilian life for any significant amount of time since he’d first enlisted. He was a soldier through and through, and he thought he’d never have to face any other reality than the one he knew in service. It was natural to think that he’d die in the field, at the hand of an enemy or a traitor whom he thought to be an ally. Either way, he’d never imagined himself living past what he’d been up until that point. With that in mind, learning how to function outside of the military sounded like a Herculean effort in and of itself.
I.e. an extremely self-indulgent fic that's being written for the sole purpose of letting Ghost and Soap be happy for once. They'll bond over military memories and tattoos, fall in love and it's going to be all fluff and spice after that. And in the process, Ghost will to learn how to enjoy life with the help of his favourite Scotsman, who's considerably more well-adjusted to retirement than Ghost is.

It was like a switch had been pulled, and there was an animal in front of Arthur instead of a man. The impact knocked him backward. And suddenly Mr. Downes was fighting him tooth and goddamn nail– and then, he opened his jaw and bit, right at the spot between Arthur’s neck and shoulder blade.
Or: After a visit to Downes Ranch, Arthur finds himself coming down with an unusual sickness.
