Summary
And suddenly, like Eddie summoned him, Buck is standing in front of his door. Eddie’s not sure if this indicates that God is real, because He saw Eddie’s quest for joy, or if it’s just Evan Buckley. It’s probably the latter.

Summary
The first thing Buck noticed when he walked through the door was the smell of plaster and wet paint. There was a white spot on the wall in the living room, primered but without any color yet, about the size of a man’s fist.
Eddie looked sheepish. His knuckles were still bruised, scabbed over but healing.
“You were in a coma,” was all he said.
“Yeah,” Buck agreed. He knew the feeling.

Eddie falls in love with Evan when he’s nineteen. He falls in love with Buck when he’s twenty-seven.
And he loves him all the years in between.
(or the one where Eddie and Buck meet when they work together on Eddie’s uncle’s ranch, and again when Eddie walks into the 118 eight years later.)

Summary
It occurs to Eddie later this is the closest he’s ever been to punching a superior.
It doesn’t so much surprise him that he felt this way, rather that he didn’t feel as strongly as this before. There were many moments in the army – hell, in the Dairy Freeze he worked in the summers in high school – where the inclination would’ve made much more sense than a figure he viewed as family. However, in the end, Eddie supposes it was inevitable. Inevitable that he’s feeling Bobby’s hands grip against his turnout, still askew and half-off where Chimney once was, hands running up his chest while he checked for injuries. Chimney is long gone, sprinting to where Hen cries out, the panic in her voice palpable and Eddie only has one functioning ear at the moment.
All of that means nothing to him, really.
Instead, he’s unilaterally focused on the helmet sitting on the ground as innocently as if someone placed it there. Rain, crashing against the visor, the flashlight still on and flickering in the storm. A helmet that should be on the head of the figure collapsed on the ground yards away.

Summary
Buck takes it to the grave.
He doesn’t mean to. It’s just—with all that time he spent teasing death, all the motorcycles and factory fires and blood-coated grenades—death gets impatient, in the end. Right as he’s starting to take life seriously. After he puts his name on the lease, buys life a ring, like, I’m in this for the long haul. Death gets jealous, and Buck falls through a second-story floor onto a derelict wrought-iron stair rail, and his femoral artery begins the quick but methodical work of leaking out the next fifty or sixty years of his life onto the charred tile floor.Bookmarked by kh08
