Karkat breathes in the salt-water air and holds it in his chest for a moment, eyes squinting at the white boat currently bobbing up and down by the dock, reflecting rays of sunlight off its handrails directly into his ganderbulbs. He’s familiar with the decently-sized trawler and pleased to see it despite what outsiders might interpret as a look of contempt. It’s a welcomed sight. A place he considered his home for the past few years —one of many within the decade.

Summary
Dave Strider is a famous movie director known best for his edgy, satirical works. When he steps away from his norm to film a slice-of-life neo-realistic piece, he's surprised to find that Karkat Vantas has accepted the lead role. Despite their professionalism on set, Dave and Karkat can't seem to get along. Dave is determined to get to the bottom of why and hopefully resolve their differences.

Dave is headed up to a cottage with a big group of college friends to let off some steam over the long weekend. They're only about halfway through the trip when they get a distressed text from one of their stragglers. Karkat Vantas is stuck on the side of the road, out of gas and alone. Dave is tasked with helping him out of his predicament, and unbeknownst to him, takes on the role of comforting a heartbroken troll weighed down by the stresses of school and his social life.
Being nice goes a long way.
And being on the receiving end fucks him up.

“Motherfucker,” he says, breaking the uneasy silence. Somehow, despite the clear exhaustion written on his face, every single syllable overflows with venom. “Double-booked. Are you shitting me?”
